I figured that if I'm going to do this, I need to do it right. After all the foot and shin pain, I went to the running shoe store yesterday and bought new shoes. I tried on a million pairs. I have extremely high arches, and skinny heels, so it makes for shoe-fitting difficulty.
I settled on a pair of shoes and got some arch supporting insoles. Then went to the gym directly. Well, my feet went really numb and sort of painful. My left foot was a bigger problem than my right, but it happened to both all along the bottoms of my feet and into my toes. I felt so discouraged.
The new shoes did help with my shin pain, though, so I was happy with that.
I'm not sure what to do. I think I'll try them with different lacing and different arch supports tomorrow and see how that goes. I did make it through the entire W1D2 workout and thought hard about my breathing and keeping my shoulders relaxed. I also concentrated on landing on the middle of my feet.
Any suggestions are welcome, of course. I hope it's just a shoe issue. I'm also pretty overweight, so maybe the extra weight is making my feet go numb.

I had the same issue! At first, I figured it was because I was wearing cross-trainers and not running shoes. So I bought a pair of running shoes. At first, life was good. Then the numbness came back! It turns out, I bought them a half-size too small. Your running shoes should be a bit bigger than your standard shoe size (I'm usually a 7.5, my running shoes are now an 8). Luckily, my sister's also a runner and the shoes fit her : )
After some major research, I found a pair of great running shoes (in my size haha), and started running again. THE NUMBNESS CAME BACK. Three pairs of shoes, changes in my running form... what's going on?! It turns out.. I was lacing my shoes too tight! Now my shoes are laced so that I can slip them on. They're comfortably loose but don't fall off. 3 weeks running and no more numbness!
I'm also doing C25K and look forward to reading all about your running adventures! GO RUNNER! : )
Hey I have had shin splints (that the horrible burning pain in the shins that doesn't go away) and very severe knee problems as a result of military service... over the years I have tried physio, podiatry etc etc etc... even took 2 years off running. I highly recommend 2 things to you:
1) see a podiatrist who is a runner. If you are in a reasonable city there will be a running shop, and they'll fit you properly for shoes. at the worst try Athletes Foot
2) see a chiropractor - seriously changed my life. no more knee or shin pain after a few treatments.
Good Luck with your c25k! It'll get better I promise!
Thank you both for your responses! I will update today about my last running issues, which included both shin splints and numb feet worse than before with my new shoes. VERY frustrating for me.
Firecracker, what did the chiropractor do to help with the shin splints?
Natalia -- I had the guy at the running shoe store lace my shoes different to hopefully help with this. Thanks for the suggestion :)
